We walked for miles through fields and woods
and we didn’t even need our brollies!
We never needed to put up our hoods
like we have done on our other jollies.
We reached the beach, and began to tingle,
we couldn’t view the sea quite clearly
it was hidden behind a bank of shingle,
but we wanted to see it dearly.
So away we trudged over the stones
up over the bank and down to the sea,
we knew we’d be aching in our bones
but the sea was calling out to we three.
What was that object on the beach?
We wondered as we walked along
It didn’t take that long to reach,
when being lulled by seagulls’ song.
A sculpture looking like two huge shells
stood there soaring high above us
with words engraved as sounds of bells
which surely were to meant to move us.
“I hear those voices that will not be drowned”,
‘Scallops’ words carved by Maggie Hambling
It seemed like they should ever be owned
by some of us who were out rambling!
